I’m happy to announce that Chennai Parkour’s Annual Beginners two day Camp that was conducted in April, 2010 now has a video. We aim to inform beginners about what Parkour is, and help them develop and understanding of why they should practice Parkour. We also ensure that they have a good understanding of how demanding Parkour can be on your body, and provide them with some conditioning exercises that they can do at home alongside a set of basic skills for them to build on.

Check out the video below, and if you like it, I invite you to give it a thumbs up.

We’ve had quite a good response, and people are asking to join us in practice every couple of days. Super!

Now, instead of repeating the same thing over and over again, here’s a quick post about how to get in touch with Chennai Parkour, and Urban Exodus.

How to get in touch?

It’s easy. Go to the Contact Us page. We have a list of phone numbers you can call, or if you’re the shy type (like me), you can mail us…

Pick up your phone, and give one (or all) of us a call. You can also head over to the Chennai Parkour Forums. This is where most of our online discussions will be focused.

Where do you meet?

We meet most frequently at the Besant Nagar Beach (Elliot’s Beach) near the Schmidt Memorial. We currently meet at Thiru. Vi. Ka. Park, in Shenoy Nagar. Click on the image below to see the location on a map.

View Chennai Parkour Meetup Location in a larger map.

When do you meet?

Most practice sessions start off around 5:30 pm and go on till 8pm or later… We encourage you to join us at the start.

How often do you meet?

A bunch of guys get together 2-3 times during the week. Kage and the gang keeps everyone informed via text messages, so remember the first step: Get in touch, and we’ll stay in touch with you.

Having said that, some of our largest groups have come together on Saturdays, so if you want to meet and hang out with the most number of guys, try to make your Saturday evenings free.

What do I have to bring?

Make sure you’re wearing comfortable clothes. They should be good to exercise in, and should not restrict the movement of your limbs. Wear a good pair of running shoes, and bring about a litre of water (you will get dehydrated really quickly). If you bring a bag or other stuff, be prepared to leave it lying around, so make sure that you minimise any valuables that you’re carrying. Things do get stolen.

How Much does it Cost?

Nothing! Just call us, and drop by for a practise session.

Anything else?

Would you like to know something else? Leave us a comment and I’ll update this post with the answer.

Hope to see you soon.

NOTE: Updated 23rd March. ’10.

Last Sunday, Balaji and I were coming back from Besant Nagar beach because it was just too crowded to practice. Wondering about practice locations, we figured that maybe the train stations will be great places to practice. Doing a Recce, we found this to be true. Ideal, with rails, stairs and open areas, the Chennai MRTS stations are brilliant locations to practice.

Today, Karthik (aka. Kage), Mathi, Dinesh and I wanted to actually try it out. We went to Mandaveli MRTS station with the intention of actually practicing. The session was good, with the rails proving ideal for balancing, vaulting and even for some under-bar exercises. The platforms are also good, but one must remember that there is a functional need to there. Traceurs and free-runners are urged to keep off the platforms if there is a possibility of risk to the commuters (eg: in rush hour).

Safety is important for the future of Parkour and Freerunning. An accident at a public place such as a railway station or park could get serious press, police and public attention, tarnishing the image of parkour and making it difficult for us to practice anywhere. Do keep this in mind when practicing.

Another aspect to note is that there is the possibility of run-ins with the LAW; namely the RPF. We had one… and were told to obtain the required permissions to practice in the railway station.

Summary

The MRTS railway stations are all great places to practice parkour, but permission and safety are important. What are we going to do about these two issues? I don’t know. To be seen.
